Book Launch - Werner Büttner in Conversation

Marlborough and Black Dog Publishing are pleased to invite you to an evening with Werner Büttner in conversation with Harald Falckenberg, Daniel Richter and Andrew Renton.

This event celebrates the publication of Coincidence in Splendour and My Looting Eye, two new books published on the work of Werner Büttner by Black Dog Publishing in partnership with Marlborough Contemporary. Coincidence in Splendour and My Looting Eye provide, for the first time in English, a major overview of the work of Büttner, one of the most influential German artists  of the past 30 years. The books deal, respectively, with the artist’s remarkable output as a painter from the 1980s to the present, and his evocative and provocative engagement with collage since 2000. In further celebration of these publications, Marlborough will display, for one day only, a selection of the artist’s work, installed in the gallery specially to coincide with this event and the books’ publication.

Werner Büttner was born in Jena in 1954. As the artist describes it, in 1961 he was kidnapped by his mother and taken to the so-called Free World, before the construction of the Berlin Wall. He moved to Berlin in 1968, where he studied Law at the Freie Universität Berlin, before becoming a social worker at the Berlin-Tegel Prison. He has participated in numerous exhibitions over the past thirty years. In 1979 he exhibited at Kippenberger’s Büro project and in 1982 was part of the Martin-Gropius-Bau exhibition Zeitgeist, which was considered a definitive survey of painting at that time. In 2013 the artist was the subject of a major retrospective at ZKM, Karlsruhe, which travelled to the Weserburg Museum of Modern Art, Bremen, in 2014. He has been Professor of Painting at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg since 1989. Harald Falckenberg, a lawyer by profession, is one of Germany's leading contemporary art collectors and patrons. His collection is now housed in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. In 2008 he was appointed Professor of Art Theory at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Daniel Richter is a leading German artist. From 1991 to 1995 he studied painting with Werner Büttner in Hamburg. Since 2006 he has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
